- August 21, 2008--Gooch & Housego announced a supply deal with Swiss space equipment supplier, Oerlikon Space, for its Modular Fibre Optic Assembly (MFOA). Oerlikon Space will use the MFOA as part of its work with the European Space Agency (ESA) on its Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission.
- August 21, 2008--At last week's Annual General Meeting of the Society, held August 12, 2008 in San Diego, CA in conjunction with the SPIE Optics + Photonics conference, SPIE 2008 president Kevin Harding announced the recent election results for 2009 SPIE officers with terms beginning January 1, 2009.
- August 20, 2008--OPTOmism: Photonics for the Green Revolution, to be held by Laser Focus World (Nashua, NH) and the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA; Washington, DC) at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA, May 18-20, 2009, is announcing a call for papers.
- August 19, 2008--Cree (Durham, NC), a maker of LED lighting, announced that Steve Kelley will join the company as executive vice president and chief operating officer, effective today.
- August 15, 2008--Strategies Unlimited has released a market report on high-brightness LEDs in lighting; dramatic improvements in the technology and cost reducation have contributed to rapid market growth.
- August 15, 2008--Optical fiber technology from the University of Michigan will enable more average peak power for fiber lasers than current fiber.
- August 14, 2008--The TRUMPF Group reports that the company's sales increased to 2.14 billion Euros (US$3.15 billion) in the 2007/2008 fiscal year.
- August 14, 2008--Konica Minolta licenses Universal Display's proprietary UniversalPHOLED and other OLED technologies to make and sell energy-efficient white OLED lighting products with novel design features and environmental "green" benefits.
- August 13, 2008--Asylum Research Corporation (Santa Barbara, CA), a manufacturer of atomic-force microscopes (AFMs) and accessories, as well as AFMs integrated with confocal microscopes, announced that the patent litigation between it and Veeco Instruments Inc. (Plainview, NY) that started in September 2003 has been settled.
- August 13, 2008--Thermo Fisher Scientific (Madison, WI) received the highest overall vendor rating for infrared (IR) spectroscopy instrumentation according to the Worldwide Molecular Spectroscopy Survey published by Strategic Directions International (SDi) in July 2008. The primary factors for selection of an IR vendor include performance, service, instrument specifications, and vendor experience.
