iSuppli says economic crisis causing mobile-device shipment contraction
December 4, 2008--According to display market research firm iSuppli (El Segundo, CA), the once almost unstoppable growth in mobile-device shipments and revenues is coming to a screeching halt as wireless subscribers around the globe extend the life cycles of their existing devices in response to difficult economic conditions. iSuppli says that in Q3 2008, the mobile-device market ended with 316.7 million units, down 1.1% from 320.4 in Q2.

European Commission funds new photonics programs totaling almost $114 million
December 2, 2008--The European Commission (EC) added two more projects for photonics components and systems R&D under the 7th research framework programme (FP7). The two programs total nearly $114 million dollars (90 million Euros) for the calendar years 2009-2010.

Ocean Optics acquires Oerlikon's coating business
December 1, 2008--Optical sensing company Ocean Optics (Dunedin, FL) acquired the Oerlikon Optics coating and thin-films business unit in Golden, CO. Oerlikon Optics USA is a supplier of custom optical components and subassemblies. Its Golden, CO operation, including plant assets and customer and supplier relationships, will be transferred to Ocean Optics and become part of the latter's Thin Films Division.

Nitto Denko's new Singapore center to develop integrated organic optoelectronics for sensing
December 1, 2008--The new Nitto Denko Asia Technical Centre in Singapore will undertake Nitto Denko Corp.'s (Tokyo, Japan) Integrated Organic Optoelectronic Sensing Device Project in collaboration with two institutes of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU). One of its planned research projects will fuse Nitto Denko's expertise in polymer waveguides with NTU's knowledge of photonics.

Chen honored as one of four Top U.S. Professors of the Year
December 1, 2008--Wei R. Chen, professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Central Oklahoma (Edmond, OK), has been honored for excellence in teaching by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and The Carnegie Foundation. An SPIE Fellow, Chen chairs the conference on Biophotonics and Immune Responses at Photonics West. He led the establishment of Central Oklahoma's biomedical engineering undergrad program, and guides students in using laser immunotherapy.

Measurement standard aims to satisfy both LED and lighting manufacturers
December 1, 2008--Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have proposed a new low-cost approach to measuring the optical properties of high-power light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The method promises accurate, reproducible, comparable measurements of intensity and color, and addresses needs of both LED and lighting manufacturers. It hopes to overcome barriers for solid-state lighting commercialization that have resulted from a lack of common metrics standards.

Report predicts slower solar-cell growth for 2009
November 26, 2008--Solar energy panel sales will be impacted by poor economic conditions, causing weakened average selling prices and order delays or cancellations, according to a report, "Opportunities in The Solar Cell Market For Thin Film Technology," recently published by The Information Network (New Tripoli, PA), a market-research company.

PennWell launches Photovoltaics World Magazine and exhibitions
November 25, 2008--PennWell Corporation (Tulsa, OK), a diversified global media and information company and parent of Laser Focus World (Nashua, NH), is launching Photovoltaics World magazine to address the rapidly growing global photovoltaic solar-cell manufacturing industry. The first issue of the bi-monthly magazine will be published in March 2009.

Daylight Solutions' new DARPA award to advance high-power mid-IR laser technology
November 24, 2008--Daylight Solutions (Poway, CA) has received an SBIR award from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to advance its EC-QCL technology for infrared countermeasures (IRCM) to disable heat-seeking weapons. The technology, says Daylight, is "well aligned with the demands of the defense sector." The project will focus on advancing the state of IRCM art by scaling output to greater than 5 Watts.
