As it applies to homeland security, optical sensing is the use of optical beams and light to detect biological agents and pathogens in the environment, as well as for border surveillance.

  • TRW Wins High-Power Laser Contract
    Redondo Beach, CA, Dec. 10, 2002. TRW has received a $21.3 million contract from the Air Force Research Laboratory to develop an electrically powered solid-state laser that puts out 25-kilowatts of laser beam power. The award is part of the Joint High-Power Solid-State Laser (JHPSSL) program that targets demonstration of the laser by the end of 2004.

This system measures the flatness of polished photomasks, as well as film stress after coating. The UltraFlat 200 mask system utilizes near-normal incidence interferometry and Corning Tropel's TMS phase-shifting analysis software to deliver a 50nanometer (nm) measurement uncertainty.
