• Gooch & Housego Names Gareth Jones CEO
  Ilminster, UK, December 19, 2002. Gooch & Housego has announced the main board appointment of Gareth Jones as its Chief Executive Officer as from January 2003.
• Homeland Security Conference To Focus On Optics In Defense
  Washington DC, December 18, 2002. An upcoming two-day conference, "Optical Sensing for Homeland Security: A User-Driven Forum," will focus on the key role optical sensing technologies play in protecting national security and in aiding national defense. As it applies to homeland security, optical sensing is the use of optical beams and light to detect biological agents and pathogens in the environment, as well as for border surveillance.
• Seminar to Focus on Future of Ultrafast Lasers
  Nashua, NH. December 12, 2002. For more than ten years, numerous research groups around the world have carried out projects to uncover the unique properties of amplified ultrafast lasers for material processing. The nearly material-independent behavior of ultrafast laser material processing, the resultant high precision, and the strong nonlinearity that allows even sub-diffraction limited processing are the main advantages compared to traditional lasers.
• TRW Wins High-Power Laser Contract
  Redondo Beach, CA, Dec. 10, 2002. TRW has received a $21.3 million contract from the Air Force Research Laboratory to develop an electrically powered solid-state laser that puts out 25-kilowatts of laser beam power. The award is part of the Joint High-Power Solid-State Laser (JHPSSL) program that targets demonstration of the laser by the end of 2004.
• Photonics Europe 2004 To Be Held In Strasbourg
  Bellingham, WA, December 9, 2002. SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering announced the first Photonics Europe meeting planned for 26-30 April 2004 in Strasbourg, France at the Strasbourg Palais de Congres. The biennial international event will showcase optics and photonics technologies and research as well as the people, institutions, and companies leading development in this rapidly growing area of science.

• Corning Tropel Introduces UltraFlat 200 Mask System
  Fairport NY, December 3, 2002. Corning Tropel Corporation has introduced the UltraFlat 200 mask system. This system measures the flatness of polished photomasks, as well as film stress after coating. The UltraFlat 200 mask system utilizes near-normal incidence interferometry and Corning Tropel's TMS phase-shifting analysis software to deliver a 50nanometer (nm) measurement uncertainty.
• Quantum3D and United Defense Develop Bradley Training System
  ORLANDO, Fla. Quantum3D, Inc. and United Defense, have successfully implemented an embedded training application for the Bradley A3 Fighting Vehicle. The application features the Quantum3D Sentiris COTS PCI Mezzanine Card (PMC), based on NVIDIA Quadro4 Graphic Processing Units (GPU)
